Truth Restores the World
Free Enquiry,
Freely Expressed.
Our Purpose
Our founding mission is to pursue and promote truth in the spirit of intellectual curiosity, scholarly integrity, and generous collegiality. Accordingly, we aim to:
To find and fund excellent research that matters
To identify and invest in intellectual talent
To support a network of world-class scholars
To project serious scholarship into the public square
To restore public trust in the arts and humanities
Our Activities
The Pharos Foundation supports intellectuals, artists, and innovators through three main streams of activity:
Pharos Lectures
Our flagship platform for the world’s greatest intellectuals, entrepreneurs, artists, and statesmen to address the greatest issues of our time.
Pharos Studies
Our library of short courses and study materials given by leading academics and practitioners, freely available to students and the general public.
Pharos Salons
Our regular salons bring the Pharos community together to share ideas, to engage great minds in deep discussion, and to enjoy exclusive previews and book launches.
Pharos People
Our Foundation is home to a host of brilliant and original thinkers, from revered household names to a rising generation of young scholars.
Our Work
Our Lectures, Salons, and Studies provide a platform for exceptional intellectuals, entrepreneurs, artists and statesmen to address the greatest civilisational issues of our time. This programme of free public education routinely draws capacity crowds to Oxford’s historic venues, including Sir Christopher Wren’s iconic Sheldonian Theatre.
Our prestigious Research Fellowships are the most attractive postdoctoral appointments in the United Kingdom. Freed from onerous administrative duties, renumerated to American standards, and encouraged not to conform, our early-career academics enjoy absolute freedom to pursue their curiosity in traditional, neglected, and understudied fields.
Our Grant Awards support high-impact projects which are unlikely to be funded elsewhere. Substantial awards are made to independent and university-affiliated scholars and creators at any career stage. Successful proposals must be bold, of broad public interest, and represent a major contribution to the given field.
